A Sparkling Smile: Jordan Litt

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

Hi Everyone!

My name is Jordan, and I am from the small town of Palmerston, Ontario; where I run a whitening business called Litt Smiles out of my home. I graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Dental Hygiene from Georgian College in 2017 and have been working as a hygienist ever since. I have been loving every minute. My journey began 6 months ago and it is starting to flourish!

The whitening process is different for every person, we all have different teeth structures and the way our teeth accept whitening. The product I use is called "Wicked White", which was created by a Dental Hygienist in Sudbury, ON (support local!) This specific product gives little to no sensitivity which is what we all want in a whitening treatment. These products will brighten 4-14 shades with one treatment. This process is done within 60-90 minute treatments, which use hydrogen peroxide and carbomide peroxide. The mix of these two natural ingredients, in addition to the blue LED light, makes for a bright, beautiful smile.

When I have a client arrive for a first visit, I perform a thorough exam and ensure expectations for the appointment are discussed. As mentioned above, all teeth whiten differently and you may need more than one appointment to achieve your desired shade. I ensure that your teeth will not whiten further than your features will let them; therefore chicklet white teeth are not always attainable. I begin with taking an initial shade and a before picture to show results. I then proceed with 2 x 15 minute sessions using hydrogen peroxide followed by 1 x 30 minute session with carbomide peroxide, an additional 30 minute session may be needed depending on staining and habits. At the end I take an end shade and an after photo so we can compare the two! Whitening should be relaxing and pain free so I always make sure my clients have a comfortable set up with the process being 60 minutes long!

It is always encouraged that clients keep up with regular home care such as brushing twice a day for 2 minutes with a soft bristled toothbrush. I also recommend that clients STAY AWAY from whitening toothpastes, as it contains granular beads that are very abrasive on the enamel and gum tissue. This normally results in recession of the gums and sensitivity of the teeth. Professional Whitening is the safest way to whiten the teeth. Flossing daily is also an important step to home care. I also recommend that every client has a professional cleaning done no more than 4 months prior to whitening treatments. This will ensure there is no tartar on the teeth or under the gum tissue and will enhance the results of the whitening. It is always very important to have a professional cleaning every 6-9 months for healthy gum tissue and longevity of the teeth.

Clients that have habits of smoking, drinking coffee, red wine, (basically eating anything that would stain a white shirt: pizza sauce, pasta sauce, beets). These habits will determine how stained the teeth are and how often the teeth should be whitened for example 3 months, 6 months, 9 months. Keeping on top of whitening intervals is as important as professional cleaning intervals. The more frequent the sessions the brighter the teeth will get and the less you’ll have to whiten in the future.
